CRaaaaaaZiNessss and a Kindle Giveaway!

The insanity of the past week has left me looking like this:

Mickey Mouse hands, wet-n-wild poncho doing a Kung Fu Panda pose in the middle of a street that's wet probably because of the fanatical weeping this weeks chaos has brought.
Most of my insanity is GREAT!

1. I did my first ever author interview AND I'm giving away a Kindle filled with three-- yes, three!-- awesome books.
2. I entered the RWA Golden Heart contest and, unlike other years when I chickened out and DIDN'T send in my ms, I'm t-minus fifteen days to sending in my submission.
3. I'm NaNo'ing like cahrazy on a brand new shiny project that is not the sequel to the RWA contest MS.
4.I'm blogging
and
accounting
and
mommying
and
turkeying
and
Christmasing
and
birthday shopping (because everyone should have all of their children around the holidays).
and...
you should just watch this trailer because I need a moment to weep in a cold cup of coffee.

I'm back...
Now, go enter my contest to win a Kindle. Contest closes 11-21-11 at 11:59pst.  Trust me, I'm up!
MWAH!

Everybody Has a Random!

Did ya notice there was no Thursday Throwback? Probably not, but that's okay! The reason why there wasn't a TT was because this post needed to be a FF!  Yep, a FREAKY FRIDAY, cuz we 'bout to get some freak on.

Two days ago on twitter, the girls and I were giving another YA writer friend a hard time about an erotica novel that we all know is inside her ...(no pun intended). Yep, our twitter stream took on a dirty-giggly-slumber-partyesque tone.  Then to my complete and utter surprise on my Tivo was two-- yes, count 'um 2-- Glee episodes.  The first one was with Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly Holiday, which is only too perfect a stripper name. LOL

As I was watching the Sex episode it got me thinking about my peaches-n-cream-wholesome-fresh-faced-friend who we all know has a slutty character hiding in the depths of her artistic character catalog.
So here goes ...
This first ever FREAKY FRIDAY Random is for you missy.
From all your questionable friends on Twitter... WE LOVE YOU!!!!

Book LaMaze...

I have a couple of friends that are pregnant with their first child. When the stick turned pink they didn't believe it, so they tinkled again ... and pink!
Now they're getting ready to enter their second trimester and all of these "what" questions are starting to surface:

What will the first kick feel like?
What will the baby be, boy or girl?
What will my stomach look like after?
What crib do I buy?
What does labor feel like?
Does it hurt?

I'm a mom of three boys, aka the mini-me's, and I remember asking ALL of these questions and more. Certain there was truth out there I consulted Web MD, What to Expect When You're Expecting, the chat boards and on, and on, and on. Everything and everyone provided completely contradicting information from flutters to pops for the first movement and tiny pinches to extreme pain for the first contraction. I wasn't sure what to expect or when to expect it. I was certain that I would miss the slow trickle and prayed for the major gush of water breaking. If I was drenched, then SOMEBODY would know what to do, because I sure as hell didn't!
When mini-me #1 was born, there was no trickle, there was no gush. The night before I was sick to my stomach, anxious, uncomfortable, crampy and then Crampy and then HOLY COW, OUCH ... CRAMPY!!!!
I guessed, maybe, it was time to go to the hospital?

I started feeling the same way about a year ago.
I wasn't pregnant, I was quitting my job to BE a writer.
Since I was a little girl, I have loved telling stories.
After thirty-something years of loving something my darling husband and I sat down and figured out it was now or never.

Time to stop talking and start typing.
I tinkled on the writer stick and it turned pink!
I had a story in my head that I was dying to share and I wanted to do it right.
I read and read and read.
I took classes and read.
I learned how to plot from the best! (thank you CJ Redwine)
I typed like a fiend.
I learned how to write a query letter! (again, thank you CJ)
I found friends and networked and found friends that became critique partners
I pushed through hard parts and cried occasionally when I knew the words S-uuuuu-cked.
I learned how to write a synopsis! (I think you know what goes here.)
Finally, I sent my work off to my critique partners.
And felt my first kick!

I wasn’t delusional to the think that my first draft would be BRILLIANT, but I also didn’t expect to see plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon.

One more thing -- and I’m really, really working on it – but I suck at punctuation.
I promise … I make daily visits to Grammar Girl.
And then, I bang my head against a wall while screaming, “WHY DIDN’T YOU PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR ENGLISH TEACHERS!!!!!”

The critiques were exactly what I needed, asked for and dreaded all at the same time. They were my contractions. I knew I couldn’t wait for the day they came. I know I need them to have a beautiful, bouncing, baby book.
I just wished there was an epidural I could ask for right about now, but I guess you can’t ask for that until you’re in Active Book Labor; I’m told there are heaps, and mountains and truck loads of chocolate involved. :-D
I’m also sure, there are published authors out there saying, “If you think this is painful --you who are only in your third book trimester-- just wait till you get to the agent search, the publishing edits and then the actual release.” Then they go and snicker with their Snickers as they edit books 2, 3, 4 or MORE!  So jealous ... of both their books and their epidural of Snickers. ;-D

So here's to one day reaching Active Book Labor!
Whew, a girl can dream ... right?

Critique Partners, Fairy Godmothers & Glass Slippers

It's true.

I have critique partners that are Fairy Godmothers. They whip out their magic wands masquerading around as Word Comments and take my manuscript from "pretty good" to "HOLY FREAKING COW!" This transformation is usually with a tweak here or what if there.
No mice, well, none that I know of.
No pumpkins.
Just amazing pixie dust thoughts sprinkled in the margins of my Word Doc.
When I first started studying the craft of writing, I desperately wanted to find a core group of people to chat with.  People who made me laugh, knew how to write, would push me to tears and then hold the tissue as I blew my nose.
The only problem was I had NO idea where to find these people. I tried boards, read where other authors found their magic CP’s (that’s critique partner, took me a couple jaunts on google to find that out). I may have placed a Craigslist ad, but I swear I won't admit to it if you ask me in person.

I really was a bit on the desperate side.
So where did I find my girls?
Twitter.

What????

Come here.
Yes, closer to the monitor.

Twitter.
I really wish there was a magic link to give you, but it took about eight months for me to get to know, laugh, chat, and finally, find my fairy godmothers.
Your book is your baby, right?
All the mom’s in the house, how long did it take you to find your babysitter?
When you left the first night, you worried the whole evening. It’s the same with critique partners. You have to build a trust to expose yourself and then be in a place where you respect their opinions and can apply them to your WIP.
I love my fairy godmothers and I hope one day you are as lucky to find a set as well.
Don’t give up.
Be patient.
And one day, Bibdidi-Bobbidi-Boo you too, will have a group of fairy godmothers!

In the meantime, another great resources that may help you meet possible FGM’s

You can follow them on Twitter as well search #YALITCHAT

given the last two posts, I think it's time to take the kids to Disneyland
